The reason New Yorkers come off as rude:

Really it's just a necessary form of self-defense.

Case in point: This morning I was walking my usual route to the bus stop (which takes me to the train, which takes me to another train, which takes me to another train, which brings me to work) and as I was turning the corner, this man sitting in his car, driver's side door open, says to me, "Good Morning." I usually ignore any communication expressed towards me by complete strangers, being the cold New Yorker that I am, but being that I have been out of the city so much in the past few months, I was left temporarily vulnerable. I mean, how can you NOT say something in return to an innocent sounding "Good Morning" no matter who its from, right? So I go (with that slightly cold distant tone in my voice of course, I'm still a New Yorker for pete's sake) "Good Morning" and turn quickly to go around the corner. It's a good thing too because, as I walked a way, he says, "Ooh, baby, you so beautiful, can I have sex with you?"

Yech. Teaches me to say hello to strangers. Let that be a lesson to you kiddies, okay?

Yechhhh.
