Yesterday was graduation. It was a good day. The poem below was read to us by the Dean of the School of Education:

An Ode to Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities
(or "What Do You Teach Them, Exactly?")

by Holly Cooper M.S., vision teacher

My friends when they ask the job that I do

Say, "What a kind soul you must be,

"Such patience, such care, such goodness, such love,

"But what is it you teach them, exactly?"

I can't say I teach the banker to count

Or the artist to paint the sky.

I may not teach the lawyer to argue

Or philosopher to ask why.

I never have taught the preacher to shout

Or the nurse to care for the poor.

I don't really teach the doctor to write

Or the athlete to know the score.

I tell them I teach kids to smile and to wave

I teach them to sit up and look.

We like to blow bubbles that float in the air

And I foster an interest in books.

I teach them to touch things, we laugh, and we learn,

We bake cookies and eat them all up

We make friends, we go places, we work and we cry

And learn how to drink from a cup.

We put things together, we take things apart,

I teach kids to paint and to glue.

We sort and we match, we tear and we snip

And I teach students grooming skills, too.

We work on our projects and then clean them up,

We put our supplies away.

I demonstrate, model, I prompt and I guide

Constantly throughout the day.

We share life with others, we find ways to talk,

I adapt electronic toys.

We play games that teach us and reinforce skills,

Use computers to help us read stories.

I try to teach Moms to not worry too much,

To not fret over each milestone.

I try to teach Dads to take joy in their child,

Not leave care to Mom alone.

So you take your algebra, physics and art,

Keep industrial technology.

You can have chemistry, homemaking, gym,

Social studies is just not for me.

I'd rather sing songs, fly kites, and plant seeds,

Practice opening and closing the door.

I'd rather teach life, work, play, and love

To my students who sit on the floor.

If I had one wish that I would express

I like where I am, I'd say,

I like laughing and loving, but there is just one thing,

Could you send some more teachers my way?

Seriously guys, if you or someone you know is interested in a career change to this field, let me know! I'll answer any questions you may have and direct you the right people. Leap with me!

Remember that paint party i told you about? Here's some that we worked on last Saturday. The bottom four are of the one B sketched and I painted (most of which B hates) in my yard today.

One of the fun group projects we did for my student teaching seminar were Barrier Free Designs. We had to come up with a venue and create a model of it so that it would be accessible to any individual with disabilities. Our group did a two floor dream library. This was a dream project so our "budget" was sky's the limit. We had a great time conceptualizing it. My "contribution" was the "Inspiration Garden" in the library as well as wheelchairs and chairs. Of course, B did the majority of my "contribution" since he didn't trust me to make proportional chairs or perfect circles for the wheelchairs. Click on the pic below to see the rest of the designs we did. Pictures of our dream library takes up the last 4 rows. Other groups created an amusement park and a general recreation area. Ours was the best of course:)

[This was a required statement for one of my classes:

(My super-senti) Personal Philosophy: Leap and the net shall appear.

To be honest, I don’t really believe I chose special education as a career. It chose me. I certainly didn’t fall into it. I definitely leaped. My personal philosophy has always been, “leap and the net shall appear.” It is a philosophy that I always believed true, but often found it very difficult to act on. This philosophy had not rung so loud and true as it did since I first entered the Severe Disabilities Teacher Preparatory program and throughout my entire experience at Hunter College. Applying for the program was a huge leap for me. At the time it felt like a complete change of career direction. I had been working in Marketing for a health non-profit, writing creatively and volunteering for arts, youth and church related activities. I was terrified, but I knew I was at a point in my life when I needed to take that leap – net or no net. Sure enough, the net did appear and remained in protective embrace for the past few years as a graduate student. I found the net available to me in the guise of extremely supportive faculty advisors, professors, cooperating teachers, students, and other school staff at my student teaching stations, classmates and other colleagues I met along the way. I also realized the net had already been there all along in the form of my family and friends.

My training at Hunter College has been an incredible life-changing learning experience. At some point during this experience, this career has become a calling that I had known my entire life. It suddenly clicked – special education is where I belong, this is what I am meant to do in life. My past experiences working for under-privileged populations and working in the creative arts all make sense to me. Through my student teaching experiences, I enjoyed the challenge of adapting curriculum to the specific needs of each student I had the honor of working with. I have been able to utilize my past knowledge and combined with the training I have received at Hunter, I am so excited to provide the support and facilitate the learning of my future students. Despite the stresses of academics, this net has molded me into something I will provide for my own future students. I want to provide the net for my students, allowing them to take scary risks and leaps that will benefit them for their own self-determination and independence.

NY/NJ folks: We need help painting stuff for the parade. Only skills needed is the ability to hold a brush and move it up and down. Would you be interested in helping Arki folks with this project? Leave a comment if your interested or email info@arkipelago.org or info@maarte.org ASAP and I'll send you details!

And yes, there maybe some really cool free stickers involved for participants:)

Yes, that may be considered bribery.
