I should not be this surprised that my final semester is currently hellish. Student teaching is much better. I am making a concious decision not to yell and finding it fun to come up with creative ways to get the kids to focus. Feeling good that some of the teaching I'm doing in small groups is making a difference. Within one week of working with one group during math - basically the groups of kids my teacher has pretty much given up all hope on are actually improving. It feels really good:) Will update more once I can breathe again...

"The United States will send more than 1,700 troops to the Philippines..." to fight "as long as necessary "to disrupt and destroy" the estimated 250 members of the extremist group Abu Sayyaf." [via NYT]

What's wrong with this equation?

My other godson is in town! Is there such a thing as having too many godchildren?

Reason #696 that I can't help but love the web: Chatting with my god-daughter in Manila and seeing how big she's gotten via a web cam, hehe.

Second week of classes, and just my second day of student teaching and I am thoroughly in the thick of final semester purgatory. Today I had to break up 3 physical fights in my 3rd grade class. I went home with a raging headache and I am dying to go to sleep at a decent hour. After some contemplation today, I have accepted the fact that my "new kids" are not going to turn into angels over night, although thankfully there are some angels in existence in the class. Maybe my repeated "That is not worth your energy", "You are better than that", and "That is not a nice thing to say" wil seep into their heads eventually. And to think that I was actually disappointed on Monday that this semester long "assignment" would not be challenging enough because the few special ed kids in this general ed class were relatively high functioning compared to lthe kids (my gad, relative ANGELS) at last year's student teaching placement. I've decided to take on this unplanned challenge of learning as much as I can on how to manage a class of 28 hyperactive, loud mouths and I refuse to repeat "get back to your seat" and "please be quiet" more than 100 times tomorrow. Man, I knew I was spoiled last semester!

I suck because I'm gonna be away on the 15th in Philadelaphia for a family thing but, here you go anyway, one of the many emails I've been getting for past 2 weeks:

People in scores of cities throughout Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and North America are organizing protests on February 15. Join with them by using these next crucial days to mobilize co-workers, fellow students, neighbors, friends and families to participate in this historic effort.

Remember that "new" blog I told you I was gonna posting to? Well, even though maARTe is still in soft launch mode, I figure since I posted again today I should just tell you. For the purely maARTSY entries, refer to THIS blog instead. I'm still warming up, but more entries to come.

I've actually been in the kitchen lately, and not just to get in people's way!

Superbowl inspired homemade nachos platter with key ingredients, namely shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes...

...cilantro, red peppers, and grated cheese!

Half-finished homemade nachos platter and a nice green salad...

Sweet potato fries (cut by B) and an old fashioned cheeseburger -- i forgot to flatten out the patty!

Of course, these "dishes" were not eaten all in one sitting. Yesterday I "made" Cranberry Glaze Pork Loin. It sounds so much better than it tastes or looks like.

P.S. I must give B at least 75% credit for the cooked dishes above. However I take full responsibility for the pork loin. Heh.
